Something to tide you over while I try to finish a more meaningful post....
I've been taking pictures of some of my favorite things -- just everyday things that give me pleasure when I happen across them. I like prosaic things that bring little flashes of joy into my life.
This is my favorite wine glass. Big A brought it back from a trip to St. Louis that involved a wine tasting. It's a tiny glass -- it holds about 4 ounces, which is just right for me. And it once said "Missouri Wines" on it, which amused me. I mean -- does anyone outside of Missouri know there are Missouri wines? It's not California, or even Washington. I thought it was funny, like advertising "North Dakota Cuisine," but what do I know. Anyway, the writing has worn off, but it's still there in my mind's eye, and that makes me happy
The other day I brought home my dinner leftovers in this takeout box. It pleases me that there is a Frank Lloyd Wright-esque pattern embossed on the top. It's just a polystyrene foam takeout box, but someone took the trouble to turn it into something sort of beautiful. It's the Coonley Trptych of takeout boxes. I really appreciate the effort.
Bess brought me this refrigerator magnet from a band trip to Washington, D.C., a few years ago. Because magnets don't stick to my refrigerator, I put it on my microwave, which is above the stove. I look at it while I'm watching pasta boil, and it inspires me. It reminds me that, no matter what happens after this, there was a time when a biracial/African American kid with a non-European name, who was raised by a single mother without much money, grew up to graduate from Harvard Law School and become President of the United States. And I think that's a good thing for the country, and especially for my girls. That really makes me happy. Also, the president has a great smile, and I always feel like smiling back.
What are your favorite everyday objects?
